Joining up commissioning

We want health and social care services to be joined up so that people have a better experience with care delivered at the time and place of their choice where possible. This is why we have launched Better Care Southampton and the Intergrated Commissioning Unit (ICU).

The Integrated Commissioning Unit is a joint commissioning team for NHS Southampton Clinical Commissioning Group and Southampton City Council. It was established in November 2013 and is based across both organisations.

The ICU aims to deliver efficiencies across departments and improve outcomes for vulnerable adults, children and families in Southampton by putting the patient at the centre and designing services around them rather than around organisations. We do this by joining up the delivery of services and adopting a strategic approach to the wider determinants of health and wellbeing.

Engagement with patients, carers and their families is a key priority for the ICU, which ensures they are involved in the commissioning process. The ICU delivers commissioning and contracting functions across a range of areas including:
