The first 11 Southampton patients have had a lung health check-up as part of a new NHS service coming to the city this year which will be offered to over 22,000 people.

The Southampton lung health check service will be run by specially trained nurses and is designed to detect early signs of any lung problems.

Lung health checks will be offered to people aged 55 – 74 who are registered with a Southampton GP practice and are current or former smokers.

Paula Head, Chief Executive of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Wessex Cancer Alliance, said: “University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is very excited to be working with NHS Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group to be one of the first areas in England to offer our city’s residents a detailed lung check. We are confident the programme will improve the lung health of the participants by offering early treatment for any conditions detected.”

It is estimated that over 22,000 people in Southampton will be eligible for the service, so this is a really positive opportunity to make a big difference to the lung health of our population. It has been great to see the first patients receive their lung health check and, as a local GP, I will be encouraging all who are eligible to take up the offer.”

Lung health checks will be offered in mobile vans in convenient locations around the city. The checks will be run by specially trained nurses from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and will involve a breathing test and, if necessary, a lung scan can also be carried out at the same appointment.

If you are eligible for the service, look out for a letter in the post in the next few months, inviting you to book your appointment with the team.

Mr Edwin Woo, a Thoracic Surgeon from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Director for the programme said: “Working to support people living with lung diseases every day, we know that early detection gives us the best chance of successful treatment.

Even if you feel fit and healthy, attending your lung health check is a really important check-up of your lung health. The appointment will take around 30 minutes and can help us spot and find the best ways of treating any early signs of lung problems.”
