Did you know that here in Southampton, GP appointments are available throughout the week, into the evening and on weekends?
Matt Stevens, Lay Member of NHS Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group and Chair of the Primary Medical Care Commissioning Committee, who are the local NHS group who make decisions about GP practices in the city, said: “We know that it can be difficult to know where to go when you are feeling unwell, so want to remind people about the range of support available here in Southampton.
If you are registered at a Southampton GP practice and need to see a GP or nurse, appointments are available from 8am - 9pm every day of the week, including weekends and bank holidays. These appointments will either be at your GP practice or at one of the six hubs here in Southampton.
You can book an appointment through your GP practice when they are open or by phoning 111 when your GP practice is closed."
You can also now order repeat prescriptions and book appointments online or using your smart phone. And many GP practices in Southampton are also offering the option to contact your GP online. To find out more, visit your GP practice website or get in touch with the practice team.
Local pharmacists are experts on minor illnesses and injuries and are a great first point of call. Many pharmacies in the city are open in the evenings and on weekends and have private consultation rooms.
There is also a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) here in Southampton which is open every day and you don’t need an appointment. The MIU is at the Royal South Hants hospital and is open Monday - Friday 7.30am – 9.30pm, and 8.00am – 9.30pm over the weekend and on bank holidays.
Matt Stevens added: “If you do need medical help or advice and aren’t sure where to go, the NHS 111 service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Phoning 111 is free and the team can find the right local service for you. They can help you with an out of hours GP appointment, emergency dentist, mental health support, let you know about a local pharmacy open near you, details of the Minor Injuries Unit or even send an emergency ambulance if necessary. The team at 111 is made up of fully trained call handlers, supported by a range of experienced clinicians including GPs, nurses and paramedics.”
